The World Bank has revised the International Poverty Line from $2.15/day to $3/day, adding 125 million people globally to the tally of extreme poor.

Despite this, India’s extreme poverty rate has declined from 27% to 5%. 23% Indians fall below the lower-middle poverty line. This decline can be attributed to the use of updated household consumption data (2022-23) using a new methodology and various government programmes and welfare schemes.
